For my wedding, are there wedding cake flavors ok?

125 people at the wedding. The cake is going to be a 3-tier cake. How do these flavors sound? For the bottom layer (which is the biggest and feeds about 70 people) we are thinking about white cake with fresh strawberries and whipped cream filling. For the middle layer (which feeds about 40 people) we are considering a Reese's Peanut Butter Cup filling with chocolate cake. My fiancee LOVES peanut butter cups, and the filling was REALLY good! However, we are concerned that this is not an appropriate cake flavor for a traditional evening wedding in January. But, it was very yummy. For the top layer (feeds about 15 people) we are thinking about a vanilla cake with hazelnut and chocolate filling. Do you guys think that Reese's Peanut Butter Cup filling and Chocolate Cake are appropriate for a wedding?

  1. I think the whole thing will taste and smell like peanut butter. Your other layers are too delicate to fight something so powerful. How about you pick one flavor for your cake, make it two layers and then do a seperate layer with the chocolate/reese pb cup filling. Usually there is a grooms cake at a wedding, that could be it.
  2. definitely, especially since it's a winter wedding. winter is good for heavier, more comfort foods. and besides, do what you guys like, not what you think should happen!
  3. I think those all sound very unique and delicious! You have to remember (as everyone said to me), its your wedding! You do what makes you happy!

I think the flavors sound awesome to me, BUT, there seem to be a number of people with allergies to peanuts, and for those people, just a speck of peanut butter could literally mean a trip to the hospital, or worse...if you select this, I would caution anyone with allergies to nuts to refrain from eating the cake at all.
  5. Anything the two of you like is appropriate. I saw photos of one wedding where the cupple had a ding dong wedding cake, the cake was made to taste like a ding dong and was wrapped in foil!

    That aside, if you are doing a traditional cake just have them make it look like a cake. People will love the change of pace and I'm sure it will be very popular. It's very appropriate, especially if your husband loves them. It's not traditional, but many people are going away from traditional wedding cake fillings anyways. The nice thing is, since you have 3 flavors, those who want traditional can go with one of the others.

  7. You better make sure that nobody is allergic to nuts or you might have big trouble in your hands. I think the bottom layer with the strawberries and cream should be the same for the 3 layers.
  8. Think about the guests that will be there, do you think they'd be open to trying that type of cake? Or will there be children there? They'd probably enjoy it alot. If you're really concerned about it being 'appropriate' maybe you should make it the third tier instead. Even though you may wanna keep your guests happy, it's Your wedding....pick what you like. :)
  9. I would love all of those flavors but i would definately put the peanut butter one in a different cake. it will taint the other layers and make them taste like peanut butter too. that's my opinion.
  10. Use the Reeses Peanut Butter Cup filling on the top (smallest) tier. that way your new husband can "have his cake and eat it too"! Your best bet is to use the hazelnut/chocolate filling for the middle tier since it will have more universal appeal. You are smart to use the strawberry filling on the largest tier. Be sure guests know there are peanuts and hazelnuts in the two tiers as many people are allergic--especially to peanuts.

  13. I'd go for the Reese Cup in the bottom layer! it sounds de-li-cious! I'd assume that a lot of younger people would like that. So, if you have a lot of younger people attending, I'd go for it. Plus, it is unexpected and tasty.

    The others sound fine, but honestly, I am a fan of Reeses.
  14. there's no such thing as a traditional wedding anymore, there is no more etiquette or rules. just have what you want because it's your money, and don't worry about what anyone might think or say. if it makes you happy, it can't be that bad.
  15. Consult your baker about having the largest layer the one with the fresh strawberries and whipped cream frosting. That is going to be the most delicate and the question is will it hold up to the weight of the 2 heavier layers?

    I agree with the other posters that the Peanut Butter one may be a better grooms cake - not because of the nontraditional flavor (all the better reason to have it!), but because it will be a taste that not everyone will share. Think about another nontraditional but delicious flavor (orange cake is actually a wonderful taste, and will work with the strawberries wonderfully) that will be a little more popular but that still reflects your tastes. Also by making the groom's cake in a flavor he adores makes it all that more special to him. Let's face it the grooms are usually the most overlooked aspect to a wedding - let him have something of his own!

    who cares if its appropriate, if you have guest that are offended by delicious cake, then they can't have any!!!

    it's your wedding, and if you want a cake made out of Cheez-its and marshmellow, by God, you deserve it!!! it's your day!
  17. Sounds good to me. Wedding cakes can be chocolate - they are covered in white usually so who cares? Are you going to serve the top layer? Usually they don't cut that and they give it to the bride and groom to take home. You may want to consider a sheet cake for a behind the scenes cake to serve so you don't run out. The fresh strawberries and whipped cream may be a problem - talk to the baker. The time of year for the strawberries, and the fact that the cake has to be left out of refrigeration for so long. You may want to consider just getting strawberry jam for filling, or using buttercream.
    Another idea is a groom's cake.
  18. If you can afford it -- perhaps have the chocolate with peanut butter as a grooms cake because the peanut butter might be kind of over-powering.

    If not, I think they sound great. Very delicious and there aren't as many strict guidelines about what you have to do or not do -- especially if breaking tradition is really tasty!

  19. You are going to want to keep the top cake layer for yourselves, so have that one be the peanut butter and chocolate one. The others sound great.

  21. YUMMY!!!! Reese“s PB Cups are one of my favorite candies-can I come to your wedding? This sounds awesome, and I would ask for a piece from this tier.

    On the other hand, I hate hazelnuts-they leave a bad taste in my mouth, so I would suggest you go with a white cake with Bavarian creme or coconut filling.

    I agree with the other posters though....you could even go with PB for a grooms cake (although IMO thos are overrated and useless) instead because the top lay of the cake is usually for you to keep and eat a year later. (Unless your baker is smart like mine and includes in the price a fresh top layer a year later so you dont have to freeze it)

The only thing about the peanut butter cups is that a lot of people are allergic to peanut butter these days, which means they'd be unable to eat the other parts of the cake as well (since they're touching). I don't see any issues with the other flavours (including the chocolate) but this may be something to think about. Otherwise, I guess if this is what you really want, why not? Or, why not have the peanut butter cups as the top layer instead of the middle layer? Then if you're worried people won't like it, you just save that for your 1st anniversary anyway. I personally don't care for peanut butter so I wouldn't eat it, but I'm probably one of the few people who doesn't like it! (I loooove strawberries, though, so the other one sounds delish!!)

    You might want to think about doing a layer with coconut. For one thing, with a January wedding it's white and would look like snow - it seems quite fitting! Also, coconut goes so well with strawberries. Yum. Just a suggestion!

I love the idea, they do sound delicious (as a person who adores peanut butter I would love this) BUT, I would worry about allergies, there are loads of people allergic to nuts, so you may need to think about that, as even though the layers are separate, there could be a chance of nut traces getting on to the other cakes.
  25. I think you are fine with the Resses. I've had them before and it's totally yummy, especially if your husband loves it. It sounds like a nice balance too.

    You need to get a plain white/yellow cake with white icing. You can get it from a grocery store and keep it in the kitchen. Fruit and nut allergies are very, very common and all three of your layers have one or the other if not both.
