wedding cake question?

my mother is making my wedding cake and my partner and i have decided on a 3 tiered chocolate mud cake, mum says she is worried about the cake collapsing with the weight, is there any way of preventing this from happening?

  2. Try a tiered look. You could get 3 different heights of cake stands (or more) to create a design that would distribute the weight.
  3. Build it in separated tiers. You can buy it at Micheal's or any cake decorating store.

  5. Instead of using pillars, try stacking the cakes on top of eachother.

  7. Some people opt for one larger cake and then 2 or 3 little cakes called "satelite" cakes that surround the base of the larger cake. You could use this idea to still have enough cake without the fear of it all toppling over.
  8. separate each layer with plastic layer separators... i don't know their technical name but I'm sure you can find them at any bake shop. they are used to make wedding cake layers stay in place and they prevent the cake from collapsing under pressure.
  9. Just get your mum to put the cakes on silver cake boards and then use proper cake decorator pillars. You can push a kebab stick down through all the layers and throught the pillars to hold it together.

    I also like the stack them all on top of one another idea.

  10. first of all: if she doesn't know the answer to this question then she needs to take a cake making/decorating class before she attempts to make your cake. Also, she should practice at least once before doing the actual cake. It's a bit harder than making a regular birthday cake.

  11. It depends on the temperture of the room it will set in. Keep it cold. Put pillars in the layers, that will hold the weight. If your stacking it on top of ea other, put a little powdered sugar on the iceing before you put the plate on top.
  12. i know that homemade cake will fall cheaper, but i'd rather spend a few bucks than face the embarrassment when the cake collapses.

    Wouldn't take that chance on my big day......

  15. Large, heavy, multi-tiered cakes do not stand up under their own weight. There are always stands supporting the different layers from within, you just don't see that until you cut the cake. Go to any cake decorating store and you can get some stands really cheap.
