Cant Decide About A Wedding Cake, Advice Please?
Hi, I am getting married in October and have paid a deposit on a cake but im having second thoughts because I am also having a Chocolate Fountain. I went over my budget a bit by getting The Riverdance to perform at the wedding which is setting me back the cost of the cake (£400), should I just use the deposit I have paid to get 1 tier of the cake made for me and my hubby to cut for the photos or should I just get the whole 4 tier cake, everyone only gets a small slice of the cake anyway so is it really worth it, I cant decide what to do.
Lucyjake: you have obviously never been to a wedding where the river dancers were performing, they are amazing, I also dont think its very nice of you to tell someone that something they have picked for their wedding is TACKY, I didn't ask for your advice about the entertainment I asked about the cake!!!
Thank You everyone for your thoughts, i have decided to go for just a 1 tier cake

- Just get the one tier, it's nothing to do with anyone else, besides that, people take a thin slice of cake home and don't eat it.
- i have been to a wedding where they had a small cake for themselves and an ice cream bar for the others. we LOVED it and it wasnt that expensive
- If you're happy with 1 layer then that's fine. You have to have one so you can do the cutting, but most people don't eat it anyway so why waste the money
- just get the smaller cake. im sure people would enjoy watching riverdance than eating cake (they have prob already eaten too much food by now, and are drinking!) you will be upset if you get a 4 tiered cake and see 3 tiers left at the end of the night. even with the 1 tier, you will prob have enough to save for the next year :)
- You can get a 1 teir cake, then go to any baker and order in-expensive sheets of cakes, so the kitchen staff can slice and hand out the less expensive cake.
- yeah just get the 1 layer, they can make false layers for the photos. Once it gets taken off and cut up no one would know. Marks and spencers do some nice wedding cakes you could have cut up to serve
- just get the one layer I know on my wedding everyone had such a good time we even forgot to cut the cake .That was 23 years ago and we are still married so get the things that are important to you because in the end the day is yours not the guests .
Good luck and have a great day x
- Get one tier cake to cut and for the photos and feed the guests sheet cake to be cut by the waiters in the kitchen. Same cake, just in sheets. Ask you baker about it. Is cheaper, less messy and less time consuming.
Good luck and congratulations
- Most people I know don't even like wedding cake so just go for the one tier.
Chocolate fountains are much more of a novelty and everyone will satisfy their sweet tooth on that
Congrats on the wedding & good luck planning
- Congratulations!
Get a 1 tier cake....
- Even though wedding cake is a traditional part of the wedding day, most guests do not even eat the cake that is served. I have been involved in catering before, working with friends who owned restaurants and thrown away most of the cake.
The other person who suggested the ice cream bars really had a great idea. With all the food and drinking and dancing, many people barely eat an entire meal. The Chocolate Fountain sounds wonderful, save the money on the tiered cake and just have a small one for you and your husband to be to cut. Much more sensible, and a big savings.
Congratulations to you both and Happy Valentines Day!
- i like stefo's ideal or u could get the one tear cake and have the shhet cakes or homemade cakes for the waiters to hand out.
u could have your briedes maids and mom bake a bucnch of cakes with white frosting and that would be cheap and ur guest would still get some cake.
- Keep the cake. Guests like cake. And really, the cake isn't that expensive compared to the other expenses.
- To be honest, most people will only look at and take photo's of your wedding cake. I would go for the 1 tier - it's your day.
Hardly anyone I know even likes it.... We opted for sponge as a result...
- Firstly, you need a cake, a wedding is not a wedding unless you cut a cake.
Secondly, not everyone likes wedding cake, so make one tier traditional and one sponge.
Lastly. It's tradition that the top tier is kept for your first new born child and eating at the christening.
If you believe in the last one, go for 3 tier, else just go for 2 tier.
Hope that helps.
- sorry but id say ditch the river dancers so tacky
- I would go with the 1 tier. I had so much left over cake after my wedding and it was a 3 tier that my aunt and mother in law took a whole tier home for themselfs. It was a waste to me and my guests only had small pieces. I think everyone will enjoy the riverdance so much more than the cake. Good luck and congrats
- Hey chick - a friend made my main cake for me, 4 tiers of mini muffins, mini cheesecakes and mini fudge brownies. For the pix, we cut a 2 tier M&S cake that my MIL bought for us. If you know anyone who's a chef, or who can bake good cakes, then I reckon theyd be thrilled at being asked to make one for your special day and will prob do it for free / cut price fee. Thats how I saved on my wedding - my cousin did the photos, my boss did all the flowers and my mate made the cake! :O) Have a great time planning, itll be here before you know it xx
PS love the sound of the dancers, very cool!xx
- because when we got married our little girl had already arrived and there were lots of other children there too we had another cake made for the kids and it was in the shape of a big bee hive with lots of buzzing bee's on wires which ment that there was lots of cake for the rest of the guests and it was a sponge which was great for me as I hate all the traditional fruit.
- just use your deposit for the one tier, and have the other 3 as fake tiers - they are cardboard or polyfoam that are iced to look like the rest, that way you have the one real tier cake to take home at the end, and you can buy a big slab cake for about £20 from a supermarket that can be served to your guests any way. that is what i am doing...maybe.... or i might even have a cupcake wedding cake.... i think they look pretty. anyways, congrats on your wedding.
- to my mind a wedding cake is an absolute essential part of any marriage celebration, the river dancers are something special that you and your partner would like to ADD to your special day...... so I'm afraid you will just have to have both. good luck for the future
