chocolate icing cake suggestions?
I made a chocolate cake and used powdered sugar and whipped cream for icing. I found the icing not to be thick enough. I have to make a bday cake this week and was thinking maybe I should just use duncan hynes icing?? Are these good and if so, would you recommend a certain flavour.

- Yes, the duncan hynes canned icing is delicious. My favourite flavour is the white cream cheese icing. It's the icing they put on carrot cake and it works great with chocolate cake. yum
- put some floor in it/or you can add some chocolate
- Cream cheese icing is decent on chocolate cake. German chocolate icing could also be an option. If you wanted to make your own, go to www.wiltons.com and look at the buttercreme icing recipe.
I use it with white cakes to make bday cakes or whatever...it's great. You can use store brand shortening, sugar, etc and it works just as well as if you'd use name brand stuff and it's pretty cheap. It's not too bad on chocolate cake, but there is a variation on their website for chocolate buttercreme icing as well.
- I would say Duncan Hines is king of icings. Also, get a spoon and enjoy (get rid of the cake).
- The canned type frosting is great. I like the cream cheese flavor on a chocolate cake.

'MY MOTHER'S CHOCOLATE ICING'
3 blocks Hershey's unsweetened baking chocolate
2/3 stick butter
1 box confectioners' sugar
1/4 c. strong coffee
2 tsp. vanilla
1 heaping tbsp. Crisco shortening
Enough milk to make icing right consistency
Melt Hershey's chocolate and butter over low heat. Remove from heat and pour the box of confectioners' sugar. Stir in coffee and vanilla. Add Crisco. Stir and add enough milk until mixture is right for spreading on cake. If you prefer the icing to have a more chocolate flavor, add another block of chocolate. You can melt the extra block in the microwave.
ICING:
1 c.sugar
5 tbsp. butter
1/3 c. can cream
1 pkg. (6 oz.) semi-sweet chocolate pieces
To make icing, combine sugar, butter and cream. Bring to a boil, stirring constantly and cook 1 minute. Remove from heat, stir in chocolate bits, beat until smooth. Spread over cake.
- This is the best icing for chocolate cakes:
1/4 cup butter or margarine
3 cups powdered sugar approximately (use more or less depending on how thick you want it)
1/8 teaspoon salt
3 tablespoons coffee
1 tablespoon vanilla
1 1/2 tablespoons cocoa powder
Instructions: cream butter and cocoa powder with an electric beater. Add some sugar, and the salt. Keep adding a little bit of coffee and a little bit of sugar until all the coffee has been added and the frosting is thick enough. Beat in the vanilla.
I really recommend this recipe, but if you want it to be just chocolate, then you can omit the coffee and use three table spoons of milk instead.
- you can use butter and powdered sugar instead of whipped cream. That is how I have always made "butter cream" frosting.
- Hi.

- They aren't the healthiest, but the flavour and consistency is very good for a fun birthday cake. Milk chocolate is my husband's favourite.
