Help! I'm baking chocolate chip cookies and they are coming out puffed up and cake like...?

I want them to be flatter and gooey chewy like... Should I add more butter or what? It's the Nestle tollhouse recipe

  1. Two of the most common answers for this are:
    1) You accidentally used baking powder instead of baking soda.

    2) You used self rising flour instead of all purpose flour.

After your first batch, cool the cookie sheets off by running cold water in them til cool. That way the bottom won't burn before the top is done!
    Good luck, hope this helped.
  2. This is an excellent question. I'd like to know the answer to this also.

I have had this problem recently. No matter what I do they alwys seem to come out cake like and not cookie like. I want moist, crispy cookies, not cake cookies. It is so annoying.
I used the same recipe I did before but they still come out wrong for some reason. I don't know what else to try. I'll be following this question.
  3. use less baking soda
  4. you need to get new baking soda or out more baking soda in.
  5. I have been having the exact same problem. I am making this cookie recipe now; as we speak, the second batch is in the oven. I am so frustrated with it because when my mother makes these, they come out PERFECTLY - and yet when I make the same recipe, they are cake-like. I have followed the recipe to the letter, so I am not sure what I could be doing differently than my mother.

Could it be that, since my oven is smaller, it gets too hot or bakes the cookies in a different way? I do not think I should use less baking soda because when my mother makes the same recipe, she does not alter it. Also, I used all-purpose white flour. I should not be having any problems.
