German Chocolate Cake in Germany?

In germany do they call German chocolate cake just chocolate

Public Comments

  1. German Chocolate Cake is named after a person, not the country, so they would probably call it Kucken chocolate German.
  2. German chocolate cake was names for the hotel it was first served at in the US, not Germany. I doubt that they have it over there.
  3. Um, a "german chocolate cake" in germany would be called a "Deutsch chocolade tört" (I think)
  4. Being a former chef from Canada the one other respondant is correct, the German Chocolate cake in the USA is a invention of the American market.

The most popular types of chocolate cake in Germany would be the traditional Black Forest cake, the Austrian Sacher Torte or a cake known as Opera cake, a classic genoise, with coffee buttercream and is 3 layers then glaze with ganache, and decorated with the word "opera" and rosettes of the coffee buttercream.

Like some things like these were given a European name for the astedic value.
  5. Ve call it chocolate cake = Schokoladentorte
    ;-)

And I have to oppose - in Germany we have chocolate cakes! A Black Forest Cake is a Black Forest Cake - there is hardly any chocolate in it - Sacher Torte from Austria(!) is just a different kind of chocolate cake and is not very popular. Maybe "German Chocolate Cake" is an American recipe, but it can't be that far away from our Schokoladen-Torte ;-)

If you would like to know what our chocolate cakes look like - please have a look:

  6. GERMAN CHOCOLATE CAKE IS AMERICAN AND YOU CANT GET IT GERMANY. THE GERMAN WORD FOR CHOCOLATE CAKE WOULD BE SCHOKOLADEN TORTE OR SCHOKOLADEN KUCHEN. TORTE HAS 2 OR MORE LAYERS AND A CREAMY FILLING. KUCHEN WOULD BE MORE LIKE A CHOCOLATE-POUNDCAKE.

    HOPE THAT ANSWERED YOUR QUESTION
  7. What is known in America as German Chocolate cake is a purely American invention a la duncan hines or whatever company. If you wanted a slice of chocolate-flavoured cake here in Germany, you would order ein Stueck Schokokuechen oder Torte, but don't expect to get the airy, covered in frosting with coconut version.
